This is something I have discussed with Sigma. The reason that they (and increasingly more and more brands) are hesitant to use “vegan” is because there are organizations that certify products as vegan. Many brands have come under fire for labelling items as vegan, without these certifications. Even though the items are vegan. These aren’t necessarily certifications that the brands are going to obtain, and they don’t want to confuse consumers by labelling items as vegan if they aren’t working with these organizations.

It’s purely a legal/customer service move and not related to their products or what goes into them. I hope this makes sense.

I recently asked a question on their sigma website about a waterline eyeliner “I wish this was vegan, will you be coming out with a vegan option in the future?”. This was their response to my question, “Sigma does not conduct, condone, or endorse testing on animals. While some of our natural fiber brushes are made from animal hair, no animals are harmed during the brush-making process. We are in the transition of making our brushes synthetic, not necessarily vegan. Many factors go into vegan certification, and although we completely support that, certification is not on our radar at this time.” so my question now is, are the synthetic brushes truely vegan? The word synthetic makes me assume it is, but what qualifies as sutible to be synthetic legally. They aren’t using animal hair anymore, but are they still using animal bi products to make their brushes? I might be making this way more complicated than it needs to be, but the wording of “We are in the transition of making our brushes synthetic, not necessarily vegan.” was troublesome for me.

The makeup is also cruelty-free, though I am not sure what products are vegan friendly. 🙂

They don’t test on animals. Sigma is in the process of moving all their brushes to be synthetic, but still have some animal hair brushes for sale on the site. They specify on each product page if they are synthetic or not.
