Brands that are NOT Cruelty-Free at Sephora:
Sephora does carry a lot of cruelty-free brands. For those who shop there, I think that it is important for them to know which brands are the best to support. Unfortunately, the house line of cosmetics sold at Sephora is not cruelty-free. Sephora does have stores in China, where animal testing is required by law. Their house brand is sold in these stores.
I know that because of this, some people want to avoid shopping at Sephora altogether. For those who decide to not purchase items from Sephora, you can always go into the store to look at the cruelty-free brands and cruelty-free products in person, take home samples, and then order online directly from the brand itself or from Ulta.
Sadly, the list of brands that are not cruelty-free at Sephora is long. This is not a full list of the brands that are NOT cruelty-free at Sephora. It’s just ones that I get asked about a lot. Or brands that people tend to think are cruelty-free but actually are not. Go to the brands that are not cruelty-free list to view other brands that test on animals.
If you are looking to purchase only cruelty-free brands at Sephora, you should avoid the following brands:
- Benefit Cosmetics
- Bobbi Brown
- Caudalie
- Chanel
- Clarins
- Clinique
- Dior
- Estee Lauder
- Glamglow
- Gucci
- Kiehl’s
- L’Occitane
- La Mer
- Laura Mercier
- Makeup Forever
- Marc Jacobs Fragrances
- NARS
- Origins
- Sephora Collection

Oh my goodness, the fear that ran through me when I thought I was gonna have to give up my KVD foundation. It’s the only foundation that matches my skin tone so far, and I had no idea what I was gonna do without it. Thank you for clarifying that while their sister companies may test, their parent company doesn’t!
KAT Von D’s parent company is Kendo, which is a sister company to Sephora. Sephora and Kendo are owned by LVMH. LVMH is not cruelty free.
LVMH is a corporation, and while they own brands that test on animals, they themselves are just a corporation.
thanks for the update about too faced. i stop buying their products. i also have informed them via email about it.
I’m curious if anything in the Sephora brand line is cruelty free…I can’t seem to find any information.
Sadly, their line is not cruelty-free. You’ll find them on the Brands to Avoid section of the Cruelty-Free Brand List.
Thank you for answering my question
Thank you so much for this list!! It’s so difficult to find out which cosmetics companies are subsidiaries of companies that test on animals. It’s been depressing to find my favorite cruelty free cosmetics companies selling out! I really can’t define myself as cruelty free if my $$ is supporting the profit of cruel parent companies!!
Thanks again for taking the time to research and to update!!
This was so helpful, thank you so much!
Is this current? I’m wondering why Benefit isn’t listed. From their site: “Benefit does not test our products on animals.
Since 1989, the Perfumes & Cosmetics companies of LVMH group (including Benefit Cosmetics) have not performed any tests on animals for our products – this was implemented long before the 2013 official ban set by the European Union.
We are deeply committed to the elimination of animal testing. We’re playing a leading role in developing alternative methods through our support of the “Fund for Alternatives to Animal Testing” in the United States. We also actively participate in validation studies of new alternative tests in the framework of the European cosmetics association, Cosmetics Europe. We are one of only a few companies to have invested in creating our own internal department to test raw materials and ingredients to further ensure the quality of our products and the satisfaction of our customers, which is our top priority.
We are hopeful that alternative testing methods will be adopted worldwide and we will see an end to animal testing.”
Hi Cori,
Sadly, Benefit is not cruelty-free. If you reach out to them directly, they state that they do test on animals when required by law. 🙁
I am really confused about beauty blender. I saw them being sold on Sephora China so emailed them and they never replied. Someone please help me out.
Hi Chloe,
I’ve talked to beautyblender about this. What is sold in China are only the products of theirs that do not require animal testing. Since they don’t make cosmetics, it’s easier for them to work within the limitations of the laws there. The sponges aren’t tested on animals, and not all of their cleansers are available there. They are still cruelty-free and assured me that they would not bring items into China that would be required to be tested on animals. I hope this helps!
Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics are no longer sold at Sephora unfortunately. I’ve now had to rediscover Ulta and shop there. Lol.
Hi Tashina, out of curiosity, is there a particular reason that brands with parent companies that do test (Kat Von D, Bare Minerals, etc) are promoted on logical harmony? I’m a fan of checking for information regarding brands here (Thank you for providing so many people with such valuable information!), and recall that after Tarte was acquired by a parent company that tests, you no longer supported them.
Hi Mariana,
Those brands are included in some lists, such as this one, so that people can find brands that work for them. I would rather someone buy from a cruelty free brand with a parent company who tests, than to buy a cruelty free brand directly. I don’t promote those brands outside of these lists. While I do talk about Kat Von D Beauty, I think it’s important to note that her parent company is cruelty free, but some of the KVD beauty sister companies are not.
Thank you so much for this site and all your work. I use this site almost exclusively now and appreciate your standards in determining which companies are cruelty free. Thank you!!
